I don’t like awards show parties as much as I used to, mostly because these days loud noises bother me and I much prefer sweatpants to any kind of formalwear, including jeans.
That said, I do like to make fun finger foods for award shows.
This year, we had veggie starters — baby bell peppers filled with peppery boursin cheese and endive leaves smeared with jalapeno hummus:
Followed up by smoked chicken with pesto mayo on cucumbers:
(To make: thinly slice a store-bought rotisserie chicken breast, then chop into small cubes and combine it with 3 tablespoons mayo, 1 tablespoon pesto and lots of pepper, then spoon onto sliced cucumbers and top with a sprig of fresh rosemary.)
And, lastly, sushi:
Fine, I’ll admit it: All I did here was arrange it on the plate and add the soy sauce.

On the coldest day of the winter so far, I decided I wanted a Miami-style raw meal. I started with this:
–Thinly slice baby zucchini with a vegetable peeler, add them to a bowl and salt.
–Mix 3 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon freshly chopped mint leaves, and a few pinches of red pepper flakes. Add the zucchini to the bowl and mix gently.
–Season with salt and pepper and add to a plate, then top with freshly grated parmesan and a few more mint leaves.
Which came out looking like this:
It was delicious, and quickly disappeared from the plate. It will be made again, soon.
I also made a ceviche, which did not come out so well, and went in the trash.
