Dr. Dog — Fate: 2008 was the year of bands named after animals, for sure — I considered Fleet Foxes and Sea Wolf (before I realized that album came out in late ’07) for this list as well — but this is the one that stuck out most. If you’ve seen My Morning Jacket or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah live, there’s a good chance you’ve seen or heard these guys — they’d been a perennial opening act, but broke out on their own this year (a show I reluctantly missed). They’re a little tough to describe — touches of Apples in Stereo, but a little crunchier, with impossible-to-resist melodies. (Available on eMusic with subscription / iTunes for $9.99)
Must-Downloads: Hang On, The Rabbit, the Bat & the Reindeer, Uncovering the Old
